Wood Green High Road, N.22 - The Long Good Friday (John Mackenzie 1980)

It is well-documented that the interior of the pub in Ireland near the beginning of The Long Good Friday is in fact the interior of The Salisbury, on Green Lanes in Harringay, North London:

This is the same pub interior later used in Cronenberg's Spider (2002)

When we see the exterior of the pub it is not, however, The Salisbury, but The Fishmongers' Arms, a  pub a mile and a half north up Green Lanes, at 287 Wood Green High Road.

We see nothing of the pub, actually, only its car park, a sign reading FAGAN'S, and a view of the King's Arms pub, opposite:

The sign reading Fagan's is authentic, as that had become the pub's name by 1980. In his commentary John Mackenzie points out that this Irish name is a faint clue that the setting is Ireland, which otherwise the viewer would not register.

Fagan's became O'Rafferty's:

And it has now been converted to flats, with a police station on the premises:

The Long Good Friday is not this location's only moment in cinema history. Behind the Fishmongers Arms was the Bourne Hall, which in the 1950s was home to the jazz club run by Art and Viv Sanders (for reminiscences, see here).

An evening there was filmed by Karel Reisz in Momma Don't Allow (1956):

The entrance to the dance hall was on Trinity Road. This is a view from Trinity Road of Wood Green High Road:

The hall, now demolished, is also famous as a venue for rock acts in the 1960s, including Cream, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. For a local historian's account see Richard McKeever's post, here.

From the poster below we can note that on a 'Heads Night'  the venue also showed films. I would very much like to know what sort of films these were:

(Note also, incldentally, that Led Zeppelin were being billed in the early days as 'formerly Yardbirds'.)

Interesting article - thanks.

We have written a little about the musical history of Bourne Hall on the community forum for the area (See http://www.bowesandbounds.org/profiles/blogs/fishmongers-arms-live-music ) As well as the Led Zeppelin appearance, Pink Floyd, Cream, Jethro Tull and many others played here.

Hi, I am trying to get hold of a photo of the Fishmongers pub, Wood Green while signed as O'Rafferty's - like the image on this page. Are you able to tell me where I can get hold of a high quality image? Thanks.

I have a picture in Fagans from 1990
The bouncers were busy throwing someone out the door
We were at someones birthday party and had a camera with us
I also have an old Fagans flyer
I think I have a pic of the dance floor too during a gig
